Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

Canine Good Citizen

Our CGC class runs in Term 2 and Term 4

If your dog is new to the CGC Program, the prerequisites for undertaking CGC Foundation classes at the club are :
1. Complete and pass Level 1 class.
2. Successfully undertake a Canine Good Basics Assessment.

The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program is a nationally recognised certification program that tests dogs in simulated everyday situations in a relaxed atmosphere.

It identifies and rewards dogs that have the training and demeanour to be reliable family members and good-standing community members. It is open to all purebred and crossbred dogs.

The program and qualifications are recognised in other countries, including the USA, where the program originated.

Grades

The CGC tests are conducted through four grades:
Foundation, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

The different levels aim to ensure that our favourite companion can be a respected member of the community because it is trained and conditioned to act with good manners in the home, in public, and in the presence of other dogs.

The tests cover the following areas, with different exercises and standards at each grade:
• Appearance and grooming
• Food manners
• Accepting friendly strangers
• Walking in a controlled manner with distractions
• Staying tied
• Control around other dogs

Qualifications

The Purina Pro Plan Canine Good Citizen TM (CGC) assessment is a certification program that tests dogs in simulated everyday situations in a relaxed atmosphere, dogs must pass all tests set in each grade before attempting the next level. Dogs entering for assessments will be registered onto a CGC database with DogsNZ.

Membership of Dogs NZ is not required, although dogs registered with Dogs NZ can have their CGC qualifications included in their registration details and use their qualifications after their name, for example:

Joey ‘CGC F’ – Joey will have had to have passed his CGC Foundation exam to use this.

Each dog that qualifies will also receive a ribbon, keychain and a qualification certificate from DogsNZ.
